No Bootcamps running at the moment, but below is an example of how our camps run.
We are busy designing a longer than usual boot camp. It will focus on building up to the Cape Point Challenge at the end of the year. Watch this space.
Breaking news – Big thanks to Stealth Performance Products who have come onboard as sponsors
Every participant will get a R 200 voucher to spend at Stealth. We all need extra straps, some duck tape or a butt pad. This effectively makes the months training only a R50 outlay!
On top of that we will be doing video stroke analysis and personalised one on one technique guidance from Springbok Lifesaver and top paddler Brett Challenor.
But wait there is more…
A Carbon Split Shaft Edge paddle will be up for grabs at the end of the month. The most committed paddler will be awarded an Edge Carbon split shaft paddle including a paddle bag personalised with their name. A prize worth R 2500. Register now to get involved and give your paddling that extra “edge”.

Durban Surfski is setting up a training squad for the month of April 2014. The goal is a kind of paddling boot camp to go from the couch to race ready in a month!![title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395692914504″]Is this squad thing for me?[/title]
Simply put yes!! Squad training is with out doubt the single best way to maximise your training time. The pros rely heavily on squad training to keep motivated and feed their competitive hunger. Us avg joes should be no different. Being part of a squad that is significantly stronger than you can be demoralising. But being in a squad with your peers provides motivation and an inter squad competitiveness that gives the best improvements in the shortest amount of time.
This squad caters for C and D batch paddlers. A and B batch are welcome but may find themselves way out front and feeling a little lonely while the rest of us play catch up. E batch paddlers are welcome but all training will be done in the ocean in whatever conditions are thrown at us, so u need to be confident in your boat and with your balance.[title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395693370872″]What do I get out of it?[/title]
The squad will be run by yours truly, Rob Tindall. I was lucky enough to spend quite a few years studying and training at the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town as part of Prof Tim Noakes’s Sports Medicine research team. I’ll be bringing some of these scientific skills to bear upon the structure and periodisation of the months training. I have been paddling for several years and doing squad style training since childhood. I’ll be leaning on a few pro paddler buddies for some of the finer points.[title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395694055381″]How will it all work?[/title]
Popular opinion seems to be that morning sessions are better for most. The ocean is also more conducive to training first thing in the morning. All training will take place at Vetchies beach in front of DUC.
So the plan is as follows.
Monday 6am to 7 am – Interval session
Wed 6am to 7 am – Interval session
Fri 6 am to 7am – Time trial and focused race and surf skills
Sat 7 am -8.30 am – Marathon training emphasizing race pacing and strategy skills.
Sun 7 am – 8.30 am – Surprise session. Could be a downwind or guest pro clinic
Session 1 will set the bench mark against which all sessions will be measured and planned from. There will be weekly re evaluations of the progress made and adjustments made to the training sessions if required. Each squad member will be tracked personally and be updated before and after every session via email. Each session will have a particular outcome goal which will be discussed before heading out onto the water. Sessions will be made up of interval sessions, time trial / evaluation sessions and race specific skills. We will have a few guest pros from time to time to share some of their wisdom with us.[title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395694578048″]Requirements[/title]
There are few rules and regulations that need to be put in place. Firstly you need to be fit and healthy. If in doubt get a doc to check you out.
If the wind is up life jackets will be compulsory. Just leave one in the car so it’s there if you need it.
If we head out to sea and there is a bit of wind and wave action, leashes will also be needed so leave one in the car just in case.
You need to have some basic ocean skills. Your safety is your responsibility. If you are not happy with conditions, don’t paddle.
You need to be able to get back into your boat easily and quickly. We can help you get better at this if you need it.
The intake form below has an indemnity section, so accepting it means you accept full responsibility and cannot hold anyone linked with Durban Surfski responsible in any way shape or form.[title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395717973407″]How do I sign up?[/title]
The sign up process is straight fwd, simply fill out the form below and pay for the month. We only have capacity for a maximum of 25 paddlers, on a first come first serve basis so get cracking if you want to reserve your spot. Only payment will secure your spot. The programme will also only run if we get 10 or more sign ups.[title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395718259936″]Why is there a fee?[/title]
We want a core squad of dedicated paddlers who will attend close to every session. Based on past experience, I have learn’t that if you are paying for something you are 10 times more likely to make a solid commitment to the programme.
You will be receiving tremendous value from the month with 22 training guided sessions , 40 pre and post session emails and 4 personalised progress reports as well as access to some of the Dbn based pro paddlers.
We offer a money back guarantee. If you are not happy with how the programme has been run, at the end of the month, we will refund your investment in full.[title type=”h1″ font_size=”default” letter_spacing=”” font_weight=”” align=”left” font_family=”” color=”” bottom_indent=”” sc_id=”sc1395718817514″]What’s the damage?[/title]
The month will cost a paltry R 250. That is just R11.36 per session. Pretty darn good value. The fee is for the month and not per session. There will be no refund for missed sessions or cancellations. Be sure your are able to commit to the month before signing up. Sessions will be mailed out ahead of of time so you can do a solo session if you cannot make the time slot.
